Do you say "hello?" or "this is (first name)" or some other variety?

Why wouldn't you just answer the phone the same way you normally do? Be sure to be somewhere quiet where you can take the phone call and hear the person, but I intend to answer the phone normally.

It's definitely a huge deal. I was about to get an offer for a V15 1L SA but when they asked if it was [my name] I mistakenly said "This is him." The recruiter told me to go fuck myself and called me a moron. Misunderstanding predicate nouns on the phone LITERALLY cost me a job. Learn from my mistake and be sure to obsess over how to answer a phone call.

I actually think this is a much bigger deal than most people think. I think "hello" might be a bit too informal. "Salutations" is much preferred, I think. Also, along with your name, you should also mention your school, class rank, and if you consider yourself a URM. I've heard of things really going downhill after the first five seconds on the phone. Don't fuck this up.

Serious question/response: what about answering v. letting it go to voicemail to screen?
I recently answered a call from a partner who basically did a screener over the phone that I was totally unprepared for. Did not enjoy it.

This is a big concern that I didn't want weighing on my chest. So I hired a secretary to answer and screen my calls for me. He has a certificate from DeVry University in Telephonic Communication Assistance where he received numerous classes in proper phone etiquette. Sure, it costs some money now, but it's an investment in my biglaw future.

Lmao. A DeVry joke.
