GULC Top 15-20% Bidlist Critique

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Jul 03, 2012 6:06 pm

.01 below top 15% cutoff. Originally from mountain west. Family in LA, SF, MN, and HI. Unsure whether I want corp. or lit. No idea on journal yet. EIW is pure lottery.

Hi - former GULCer working in SF now.

Why Irell in Newport and not Century City? sure you prefer that?

Is Quinn going to be there? might consider them, or mass mailing. Orrick? Bingham?

looks like a solid list to me.

Hi- GULC rising 3L working in NYC.

You're not going to get firms ranked below #20 or so (esp. A&P-- I bid them #1 last year in order to get a slot. I bid Wilmer #3 and did not get an interview. Same with W&C in my top 10). Looks like you've got the right selection of firms though. Might want to work on the exact ordering.

Just graduated from GULC.

I get that you're trying to use the ties and such, but that bid list strikes me as a little all over the place even with competitive grades. For instance, if you're not sure if you want corporate or litigation, why put Chapman first (unless you've got a particular reason for that)? It's much more finance-oriented a place and won't give you the chance to try out a bunch of different areas during the summer. You can also be more aggressive; sure, Crowell isn't a bad place at all, but it's got smaller summer classes so it's not going to give you as much of a benefit, but a place like Weil may give you more consideration and you'll have a better shot of getting it if you rank it higher. Why Exxon? Alston and Bird with a tiny class? You need more broader options in that Top 10 especially. Move Perkins Coie Seattle down a little while moving places like Robes and Debevoise and such up.

A lot of the EIW lottery stuff is a game of rankings. You'll have to look at the number of slots, bids, etc. and play with it. But right now, you're pretty much guaranteeing no interviews out of the Top 20, and you're picking many firms with smaller summer classes that may not give you a great opportunity for a job. Sure, the screener hustling post-lottery works out sometimes, but still, it wouldn't be a bad thing to reorder that list a bunch and consider mixing it up with places that'll give you a chance to try out different things.

Get rid of Exxon. Even in the 30s it's not worth the bid. They hire about 4 summers and only offer 1 or 2 of them.
