What to send firms when mailing?

I'm assuming that a resume and cover letter should always be included. However, what about writing samples, transcripts, and references? Should we indicate in the cover letter that these things can be provided if requested, or just send them in the initial email with the resume and cover letter?

Most firms will indicate what they want. I found it best to email the recruiter first and ask if they are currently accepting applications and, if so, what materials they would like to see.

When you mass mail you send a resume and cover letter. If you're responding to an ad on symplicity it will tell you what to include.
