GULCer here.
Top 20 on your bid list get your resume even if you don't get an interview with them through the lottery. Least selective firms are the hardest to get interviews with, of course.
This is what career services tells us, but I got an email from a firm I listed 45th asking for an interview.

YMMV. and i dont' know why career services would lie, or if they just made a mistake that year.

There's a file that lists how many interview spots there will be this year + how many interview spots there were for that firm historically and how many people bid on them last year. Use this to strategically bid to maximize interviews.

If you have decent grades list a few home run firms in the 30s. Since GULC is getting destroyed in OCI the weakest firms are the easiest to get interview with, so if you're at least top 1/3 you may as well take a shot at prestigious firms since the interview is low cost high reward (you're not getting a non-selective firm with your 25th bid, but you're probably gettign DPW or Weil with your 25th bid).

Mass mail like there's no tomorrow.

Go to every hospitality suite, drop off your resume, chat, be friendly, etc.

if any GULCers want a bid list critique for NY and DC firms post ITT and I'll PM you.

I'm in the top 10%, but not interested in working in NYC at all (interested primarily in DC/Chi lit) . Is that suicidal?

Ties to Chicago? Can be a tough nut to crack.

DC is totally doable (I was top 10% as well and got two DC offers. I basically split bids DC and NY, and ended up with 6 or 7 NY offers and just the two DC offers. kinda shows how intense DC can be).

Some ties, I lived and worked there for a few years

Definitely give it a go then but I would hedge with some DC firms.

And, if you can bite the bullet, I'd mass mail to some New York firms and stop by NY hospitality suites during OCI. so much easier to get firm jobs in New york than anywhere else, and you definitely don't want all your eggs in the DC/Chicago basket (both ultra-competitive markets).

I'm risk averse though. Odds are you'll get something in DC and probably in CHicago as well.

props on killing 1L btw. well done.

How do you recommend for a transfer to bid? I have strong ties to Chicago and Southern Florida (old school is in southern florida). Also, no ties but I'd love to work in NY.

How easy/hard is it to pick up interviews by emailing pre-EIW or stopping by hospitality suites? Does the level of difficulty have any correlation with the perceived selectivity of the firm?

When are our EIW callbacks normally? EIW is from 13-17, and school doesn't start until Sept. 4, so will they be before or after school starts?

My understanding is that they can be both before and after classes start, depending on how quickly the particular city tends to move, how quickly the firm moves, and how quickly you book your callbacks.

Is anybody bidding on California, or has anybody bid on California that I can run my bid list by or ask about the callback/offer prospects from GULC? I'm bidding mostly CA, with pockets of NY, and don't want to waste a bunch of bids for jobs I won't get.

For most of the V100, firms with large classes and firms at 160, you'll know within two to three days, a week at the latest. For the 10% of stragglers, it could take as long as a month. They all say they take their time so they can sit on certain resumes as yield protection and so people they don't select won't blow up their phones begging while the rejection letters are in the mail.

Most (if not all) DC/NYC firms will call within 24-36 hours, if not sooner.

You schedule the CB, but the sooner the better. Most people generally start the Monday after EIW.

It's fairly hard if you are outside the auto-hire pool (top 5-10% + main or URM + grades). Emailing pre-EIW tends to work better than the suites. Remember, unless you've got something usually desirable, they're already seeing at least 21 other people who managed to get interviews with them. It doesn't correlate to the firm's selectivity. Also, it's risky, but interrupting the interviewer of a firm without a suite during their break or at the end of the day can work very well in my experience.

Agreed. You want your callbacks as early as possible. Go to NYC multiple times, miss class, etc., if it gets you earlier interviews because that is when they have more openings to go around.

Yep- I basically did not attend class for the first 3 weeks of last fall.

Didn't harm me in terms of fall grades, but their importance vis a vis getting a job is extremely negligible (and that's understating it).
