Bottom 1/3 at NYU, bidding help?

Rising 2L at NYU. Was slightly below/around median after 1st semester and have since gone below the bottom 1/3 line, though not too far. Still above a 3.0. I have no excuses for last semester, but this semester I was dealing with some medical issues - though obviously I don't want to be discussing my medical history in interviews.

I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering from a pretty decent school, and worked for 3 years as a design engineer for the US division of a major Japanese automotive company. UGRAD grades were fine, but not amazing. 1L summer currently with a district judge in DC.

What should my bidding strategy be? Am I fucked? I want to do IP but I'm afraid my shitty grades will outshine my background and school(s). My ties are to Florida but I really don't want to go back there.

I have posted this like 394839324890325892 times now on TLS, but I think someone who has all Bs and B+s (with more or equal number of B+s) will do JUST FINE at EIW if you bid somewhat conservatively and if you can come off as competent and mature in the interview.

I say this bc I had those grades in 2010, and I did fine (V20s and up - about 10 callbacks). I know others who also had similar experiences. Show them that you know what being an associate is like, show familiarity with the kind of work you will do. Explain how your previous WE has given you relevant work skills.

Look at the number of associates/number of interviews at EIW that each firm in V20 and up is doing. Bid on them according to likelihood of getting an interview and how much you want the firm (meaning, if you really want a firm but they don't have a ton of slots, bit them higher BUT not if you have zero chance...i.e. the v10 and several others). Make sure to get interviews with firms that have summer classes of 25 or more. Throw in some NJ if you want to be even safer.

You don't have to be fucked, but you could mess this up by interviewing at the wrong places or failing to convince interviewers of your competence.

another tip: show up early everyday during EIW and sign up for ANY and all extra interviews you can. you should be fine, but its all partially a numbers game. do 30-40 interviews if you can (it can be done, I did it).

OP here. I have a smattering of B-s, an equal number of Bs and B+s, and one lonely A (in a doctrinal class). Not quite as hopeful as "all B+ and B".

You have above a 3.0 with IP background- you'll be fine. Make sure to target the IP boutiques with a mass mailing campaign.

OP - how did things turn out for you? Realize this is quite dated, but I'm in a similar position at another CCN school.

I'm not OP but I had similar grades from CCN and I struck out. It can happen.

Basic advice is to bid nyc firms with big classes. Make a bid list and post it in here. You will get some great help.

You can't know this before 2nd semester grades.

Were you IP? Did you bid conservatively on NY firms?

Any idea on what might have happened / any advice other than the bid conservatively? I hope things worked out for you.
