Switching after 1L or 2L Summer?
Can people offer advice on how to tactfully switch after 1L/2L summer (for non-field specific interests)? while also not burning bridges where you did your summer? (and even possibly still keeping that place as a possibility, in case other things don't work out)?

You shouldn't be committed to having to work during your 2L at the same place you did 1L.
If you worked at a firm they will let you work at a different firm and if they're going to make you an offer they're going to do with within the legal hiring guidelines giving you time to accept or decline.
If you worked at a place where you have no intention on accepting an offer then just move on 2L to somewhere you do want to get a offer from. You 1L legal employer shouldn't be holding your feet to the fire to continue there unless you're on some kind of fellowship or scholarship that requires you to go back during 2L
Our firm gave 1Ls jobs and let the work at the firm for the first 3 weeks of 2L and then they could go where ever they wanted to for the rest of the summer. They had an offer in hand and were free to accept or decline.
But your 1L summer is not normally the place where you're working because you're dead set on the practice area. You just need to get some good experience from 1L summer, and unless you were a horrible intern they should have no issue with writing you a letter of recommendation or being a reference if you need one.
