Figured it would be nice to bring all the Penn folks together and try to sort some stuff out, maybe some people know more than others about particular firms and such.

I really have no idea what I'm doing with this stuff. I pretty much just want to slap all the NY offices down and call it a day haha

That has basically been my strategy. NY offices with big classes.

We find the big summer classes from the pie chart thing Penn gave us + NALP right?

Any "feel" for Philly?

Can anyone take a look at participating firms' NALP OCI sheets and tell us a) what direction GPA cutoffs are going and b) what direction class sizes are going..........ktahnkx 1000 million.

Yeah. NALP lets you check by office. The Penn charts are a little misleading because some firms have fairly large aggregate positions, but take more in DC than NYC. Also, a lot of the class sizes change quite a bit year to year. Off the top of my head: Jones Day, STB, Weil, Paul Weiss, etc etc.

It really varies firm to firm.

How 'bout "advancers versus decliners"...do we see more of the one than the other (w/ respect to class size)?

I started to look into it when they updated the NALP directory but so many offices were missing that I just decided to hold off until they had everything back up and running. I haven't gone back to it, and someone who has can chime in, but it was really fairly split, with only a couple of big movers that I can't remember now. I'm guessing it just depends on who had a good year and who didn't. I did notice when I went through the old data that the predictions were pretty accurate in most cases though.

I guess I shouldn't put down the whole V60?

Mayer Brown (NY) seems to have a larger class size this year. They have 13 in NY (NALP says 11, but the data's off because the firm took on two Dewey summers after NALP collected data).

Biglaw firm goes bankrupt and sends associates and partners everywhere? Idk, just seems like the effects of this can't be considered long term.

Could someone please link to where we can view a firm's SA class size and in which particular cities? I'm having trouble tracking it down for some reason.

I assume most classes will be similar. Practice groups fluctuate, and some firms are doing better than others. So there may be variations but I expect over all it's about similar.

So, be aware of firms with smaller classes.

Generally there is a correlation, but post-crash, median class sizes fell by about a third, from 12 to 8. So 2011 was 9, IIRC. So, ya know, we are waiting here for a rebound...

I don't see a rebound just yet from where I am at. Yes the crash is history, but corporate clients are wiser on legal expenditures. Many firms shed weight during the crash and are doing better now, so they are cautious about getting back on the binge.

ETA I mean be aware of classes that are still getting smaller.

I am a little confused by the hiring grid. If I want to know how large the 2L summer class is going to be in 2012, I go to expected, 2012, summer, 2L, and Paul Weiss shows a summer class of 106? Do I have this right?
