Summer Associate - When to expect an offer?

Probably answered many times before, but, do firms usually wait until the fall to make offers or at an evaluation at the end of the summer?

(I know fall is at the end of summer...)

Worked for 2 different firms (one after 1L and the other after 2L). Both made offers after the summer program had ended, but well within a week of the last day. That being said, I had a fairly good idea that I'd get an offer based on convos with people on the hiring committee.

most 'good' firms will tell you before your last day. a lot of firms dont, but this is the general rule

1L firm made an offer mid-late august. Right about the time they were beginning OCI
2L firm made an offer about a week after program 1st week in Aug before 3L OCI would have started.

It can really depend. Sometimes they just need to get all the hiring partners on the same page to talk about any outliers (meaning people they have a reason not to hire). If they hired more people for summer than they can bring on the next fall they may take a bit longer making than a decision than say a firm that intends to extend offers to every 2L they hired.

The firm also told us to apply for 3L OCI and not to take that advice of indicative of their willingness to give offers. They just said it was in our best interest to be able to entertain all offers.
