Mass Mailing Out of Market Firms

So I'm thinking about applying to some firms in my home market, which is on the other side of the country. I'm considering moving back there for family reasons.

These firms do not visit my current law school. I just have a few quick questions about contacting them.

1) Should I just contact them by mail?

2) When should I begin mailing them?

3) When I do send them materials, what exactly should I include? (cover letter, resume, and transcripts)

4) And what type of experience should I expect? I am only looking at large firms in the area, so if they like me will they ask me to fly out or something? Or will there be more of a screening process before they actually invite me to interview (that is, if they like me)?

Sorry if these are dumb questions, I'm not familiar with this whole process. And thanks for the help!

There's a reason some of those threads are stickied.

All you need to know should be in here:

I glanced through that thread and did not see an answer to question 2. What is the consensus for the appropriate time to begin mass mailing?

Mid-July seems to be the consensus. When they are gearing up for OCI but not doing it yet.

Also, smaller firms won't be ready until the fall usually. October-ish.
