Working in two different states?

Hi all -
My apologies if this is not appropriate for the thread, however, I've attempted to research this online and haven't really been able to come up with an answer at all.
My question relates to working in a law firm, but being able to spend time in two different states. Does this ever happen, and if so, under what circumstances? For example, if someone wanted to spend approximately 4-5 months working in Phoenix, and 7-8 months working in Seattle, is that something that is done regularly?
Obviously taking and passing the bar in both states would be required, I'm assuming, but I'm just hoping to see if anyone has any knowledge this type of situation.
Thanks in advance, I appreciate any and all comments.
