If you've submitted your cover letter/resumes to a firm, do they keep them on file or do they dispose of them when they reject you?

For example, if you submitted your resume for OCI last fall, do they still have that resume on file? Or do they just look at the new one?

I'm pretty sure saying "on file" means "in the garbage" in this context.

If they actually took the time to send you a rejection letter, it's not completely implausible, but it seems likely the resume just gets trashed.

At the firm where I work, old email is automatically archived and all of it is searchable. So unless the person you emailed your resume to expressly deleted it, as opposed to putting it in a "2011 SA Applicants" folder, I wouldn't be surprised if it wouldn't turn up with a quick search of your name.

If you're just worried that you haven't changed very much since last year, I wouldn't stress. If you're thinking about doctoring something/getting caught in a lie based on last year's information, I don't imagine it would be too hard for them to pull up your previous app.

Or, and I'm just spitballing here, a person doctored an unofficial transcript and now wants to claim it was an innocent mistake but also listed the inflated GPA on the associated resume.

At my job, they initially asked only for a unofficial transcript during interviews but then asked for an official one prior to the actual start of the job.

Bottom line, if there is a reason for someone to go back and check your earlier resume, I can't imagine they would be unable to find it. Even if it wasn't saved in a specific file, the HR person probably emailed it to all of the partners and associates you interviewed with etc. Highly unlikely they wouldn't be able to track it down if they wanted to.

If, however, it is something innocent like a lack of increased extra-curricular responsibilities or a grade drop resulting from subsequent lower grades (rather than from correcting an initially doctored transcript), then yes, don't sweat it.

if you sent it in electronically via email, then yes they will have it on file.

how do i know? i applied to a v100 firm for a 1L summer associate position. when i returned for a 2L callback interview, they had pulled the wrong resume from their doc management system and given it to all my interviewers. i didn't figure it out until my first interviewer asked me whether i had done anything with my 1L summer.
