I will be in DC and have been told by my firm that suits are neither expected nor encouraged. Thus, I'm thinking slacks and slim dress shirt with no tie.
Also I'm planning on having a navy suit with tie in my office just in case.

I understand what business casual is, and my firm is pretty explicit in what is allowed v. what isn't. But i need help with what looks good. What kind of color or pattern should the dress shirts be? What color slacks? Etc etc.CyLaw wrote:I will be in DC and have been told by my firm that suits are neither expected nor encouraged. Thus, I'm thinking slacks and slim dress shirt with no tie.

I wanna not look like an idiot.
Suit in the office is a good idea though.

Slacks=dressier than Dockers khakis.
Blazer can be a nice touch.
Medium-darkness grey, darker khaki color are good. I'm not a fan of wearing a tie without a jacket.

Re: SA Business Casual - Men's Clothing Thread
My firm has business casual dress code.
However, an SA from last year said "Do not start in business casual, start looking your best and then transition into what everyone else is wearing when they ask you." It is basically a fine line where you want to show respect to the firm by dressing nice at the onset, but not look Aspie when everyone starts to transition into business casual.
In terms of what is business casual? Look at what everyone else is wearing and mimick them, but look slightly better.
In NYC this could be khakis. In CA this could be a red checkered shirt and non-poor-person jeans.

Ahh. My bad. I've never been known as fashionable, so I am keeping it safe with my wardrobe.Desert Fox wrote:I understand what business casual is, and my firm is pretty explicit in what is allowed v. what isn't. Mostly have blue or white shirts, with one pink, one creme, and one white with light gray pin stripping. I got all them on deep sale at BB.
For pants, I mostly have pure black, but I am trying to replace those with gray (both light and dark) and navy blue.
What do people think about either dark green or brown pants?

Don't waste your money now when you don't have any. Look at 4th year associates are wearing and mimick them.CyLaw wrote:Ahh. My bad. +1. If you're worried about dressing up a dress shirt and slacks, you can always throw a sweater over it. Everyone knows adding a sweater makes any outfit extra classy.DallasCowboy wrote:I'm not a fan of wearing a tie without a jacket.

West coast office of BigLaw firm, that specifically said I don't need to wear a suit on the first day. But I'm assuming I'll want jacket+tie in case of meeting with clients/court. Should I bring that the first day or just wait until later in the week? Any other questions that I should ask to avoid studying for PR final?

Re: SA Business Casual - Men's Clothing Thread
SV firm: was told by my contact that men generally wear slacks/khakis and a button up, no ties and no jackets. Was told polos are too informal. Suits for certain events though. When I went for my callback I saw a partner in a ratty sweater and jeans, as well as a 5th year associate in a polo and khakis.
I agree that a tie without a jacket looks weird (what are you, a waiter?). A sweater doesn't seem like a great idea for the summer. If you want to err on the side of caution I would go with a suit but no tie since you can always just take off the jacket. If you're not doing a suit, I'd go actual dark slacks (not dark Dockers or something like that). Shirt, probably doesn't matter all that much but the colors mentioned above seem fine.

You should probably not study for it. I hear it's detrimental to your success to have a rigid and unbending code of ethics.desertlaw wrote:West coast office of BigLaw firm, that specifically said I don't need to wear a suit on the first day. I expect to wear slacks with a BD-collar dress shirt every day. Maybe a rare polo if it is insanely hot. My firm is really casual, so it is pretty much whatever.

I plan to wear a very boring array of slacks in black, navy, brown, and perhaps grey. White shirts, varieties of blue, maybe a light lavender, and maybe stripe varieties in any of the above except for the lavender. Ya know, business casual.

This thread is relevant to my interests.
P.S. word on the street is that Dillards has some surprisingly dope slim-fit non-iron dress shirts. Much more affordable than BB for almost equal quality. Throw that with a set of HSM or BB slacks and watch the honeys pile on. An easy rule to follow is that the only acceptable monochrome shirts will be blue or white. If you want another color you have to get a pattern or striped shirt.
Shoes: Bostonian cap-toes at the low end. Sacks 5th has a nice house-brand at the mid-range price-point. AVOID SQUARE TOES.
Belt: Fuck, this doesn't matter as an SA. Get a $40 reversible belt from ye' olde department store.
You're welcome.
