Screwing up

This probably applies more once you've been hired then when you are an SA, but it's worth asking anyway.
What do you do if you work at a big firm and you screw up so badly that you end up on ATL/AmLaw/ActualMedia? Like, say you end up being the associate who forgot to set up his mail forwarding in that SC death penalty case last year. Or the monthly "partner at V100 caught drunk driving" on ATL. Do you just resign? Is it implied that you've been fired and you shouldn't even show up for work? Is it a given you will be fired at year end? Is there anything you can do/say to get them to reconsider? Do you even bother looking for legal work or just go straight to another industry in another town?
