Not on your list but an unsolicited commentary: One of the partners selected to start up the office is one of my absolute favorite people in the firm.

any updates on the detroit office? will be interesting to see where they set associate salaries. my guess is it will be the same as cleveland/columbus.

What's that, 140k? I know that's where Foley lands and i'm guessing they'll peg with that, maybe 145 which would be nice. Create some upward pressure especially with Gunderson and Taft entering the fray for the metro area as well.Abbie Doobie wrote:any updates on the detroit office? will be interesting to see where they set associate salaries. my guess is it will be the same as cleveland/columbus.

Re: Jones Day
i checked nalp right after i posted that and it looks like they are setting the starting salary at $145k (same as cleveland/columbus) which looks to be the highest in the city. it's pretty tempting considering that i'm from mi and wouldn't mind moving back home and i'd probably come out ahead compared to the $160k i'm at in a major city due to substantially lower col. my only concern is that being associate in a tiny office in detroit will probably limit my in-house exit options.Anonymous User wrote:What's that, 140k? Re: Jones Day
How competitive is it for 1L SA positions coming from a T-14 aiming for the smaller markets (Columbus,Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit)? Is top 5-10% still necessary?

As a Firm, fit is more important than grades and there is no real cut off. Certainly you must have something impressive on the resume and transcript, but it doesn't mean you need to be at the tip-top of your T-14 class. (Clearly above median should suffice to have a fair shot if you do well in the screener)
We also hire from lots of schools outside the T-14 (as compared to peer firms). The further outside the top schools you get, the more interviewers will expect top academic credentials.

Does anyone know what the schedule has been like for summer associates over the last few years? I'm trying to plan a vacation, and I don't want to pester the firm for dates

Boo fucking hoo. It's just clothes. If they fit right there is no difference between a suit and business casual.JohannDeMann wrote:probably wear a suit every fucking day except friday when they let you take the shackles offAnonymous User wrote:Does anyone know the dress code at the Pittsburgh office?
Firmwide, the policy is business formal every day. I know DC and am pretty sure Cleveland stick closely to the policy. I get the impression Pitt does too. Other offices adhere to varying degrees.

When does salary go up? If an associate started October 2015 does salary get reconsidered in July 2016?

Simply not true. For a guy, wearing a tie is never as comfortable as not wearing a tie.

Re: Jones Day
Hey,
Im trying to pick a law school and hoping to have a shot at summer work or possibly full time employment with Jones Day or someone comparable in Cleveland, wondering if going to a low ranked regional like Cleveland State for free gives me that opportunity if I do well or if I should take on the debt with an Ohio State level school. T14 are not really in the cards, the highest ranked school I've gotten into is Notre Dame. Thanks.

While we do tend to value school diversity a bit more than peer firms, your odds will improve by going to an Ohio Stare or ND. The firm has deep ties to ND from the Managing Partner on down. The DC hiring partner is a Buckeye.bill1995 wrote:Hey,

That said, Cleveland State isn't impossible. Check out www.jonesday.com/_lawyers/Search.aspx and search the schools you are interested in. For Cleveland State, there are 14 associates, but at least one of those went there for undergrad. But still there are generally 1-2 in each year group 2009-2015. All in the Cleveland office.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
