V100 Placement Statistics

I'm considering a transfer and am interested in seeing how the schools in the T14 fare in the V100 relative to each, but can't find a source that has the stats that I'm looking for. Is there anything similar to the type of information that existed at lawfirmaddict.blogspot.com/, but that is current?

http://www.law.com/jsp/nlj/PubArticleNL ... slreturn=1 is a sufficient proxy given that the T14 place nationally. If you were targeting T1 schools that over-represent at regional firms likely to be in the NLJ250 but outside the V100, it would be a different story.

All of the T14 now break out law firm employment by firm size. The 500 attorney+ category is a very rough proxy for the Am Law 100, most of which are in the 350+ lawyer range. It leaves out places like Quinn and even Cravath that are smaller than 500 attorneys, but it's probably the best you can do, because the lawfirmaddict data is by now very out of date. I've reproduced some selected schools below:

For C/O 2010:

Harvard: 288 of 589 = 49%
Columbia: 193 of 430 = 45%
NYU: 240 of 497 = 48%
Chicago: 101 of 195 = 52%
Penn: 139 of 276 = 50%
Michigan: 129 of 374 = 34%
Virginia: 142 of 374 = 38%
Berkeley: 122 of 296 = 41%
Duke: 73 of 213 = 34%
Northwestern: 115 of 285 = 40%

If you're trying to transfer, you should be more interested in how the transfer population does at a particular school does. For instance, even thought Northwestern generally outplaces Michigan in terms of the V100, Michigan transfers do better than Northwestern transfers. And if you're considering CCN, I think Chicago transfers generally do slightly better overall than CLS/NYU transfers. Penn transfers also do extremely well. Not sure about Berkeley transfers. Don't know how GULC transfers did this year, but I've heard it was generally mediocre in the past.

UVA and Duke don't take very many transfers at all, so it's hard to tell with them. Cornell takes transfers, but will only accept people after the NY Job Fair deadline, so it's worthless to apply there.

This is pretty anecdotal, but it is from someone who actually transferred.

other than anecdote, do you know of any established data for transfers? If you do I'd be very interested in finding it

I don't think any school separates transfers out of the regular 2L population for employment, so the best you're going to get is anecdotal. I actually asked GULC about it last year and probably would have worked with their Career Services office if I went there, but I decided on a different school. So anecdotal is probably your best bet. For most transfers, whether or not you get a V100 depends on a lot of factors (your old school, your target markets, your GPA, your class rank, where you have 'ties' to, how good of an interviewer you are, etc).

I entirely agree with Keg that looking at these overall placement figures do not give you an accurate picture. Truth is, transfers tend to be among the most successful subsets of students when it comes to employment stats. If you were to transfer to a school like CCN, or Penn, biglaw would be very easy to get. I transferred into NYU, and keep up with many of the transfers. Every single one is going to some V25 or above, with a few snagging jobs in the V5 range. I don't know a single transfer without something lined up. Since there are about 50 transfers, I don't know them all. I am close with about 10-15 of them, but if every single one in my circle has a job, I'd imagine the overall success rate is very high.

So don't even bother with the overall figures since they include stats for the entire class top to bottom. But as a transfer, you are de facto treated as a much hotter commodity than a median or below-median student at the new school (at least from what I have seen).

Got the Northwestern stuff second-hand but from sources I trust.

The NLJ250 numbers are one of the better proxies we have, but the list is still inaccurate. 71 of the 250 firms do not report school-specific data. And it's not firms towards the bottom that don't report - for NYU, for example these firms accounted for 58 grads in 2010, with 49 coming from 5 firms alone. http://www.law.nyu.edu/news/REBUTTAL

Right, but in theory, it would still map the relative rankings among the T14 the same, even if it over-represents regional firms and under-represents under-reported firms.

As a transfer who chose NU over Michigan I would say this is fairly credited. I think at least some of it has to do with the fact that transfers without WE tend to struggle more at NU than they would at Michigan, though (for obvious reasons).

NU transfer no WE here got the SA job (V50) I was wanting as well as a fellow transfer got same SA with same firm, no WE. Not sure how rest of transfer class did. I had a lot of call backs (Chicago & NY) and a few offers. I was encouraged to transfer specifically to NU from loads of firm partners for increasing my odds for an SA. In my experience Chicago firms really like the NU name, if "fit" is there they're ok without WE.
