I'm rank 1 (w/ work exp) at a t2 but can't find a summer job Forum

I started in early February and sought an internship with a federal judge - I've applied to approximately six, have heard back/interviewed with two, was denied by one, and haven't heard back from the other for two weeks (he told me it would take a while). Last week I sent out about 20 applications - state judges, small firms, corporations, you name it - and have heard back from none.

What is this, I don't even.

Update 3/23: I was offered a research assistant position today by one of my first semester professors. I also got replies to the batch of applications I sent out - I've got two federal judge internship interviews scheduled for late next week.

Feels good, man.

1) You applied to only 6 places originally. 2) You then applied to only 20 more places, in mid-March. 3) You didn't send any applications to public interest employers, which is where the majority of 1Ls work over the summer.

You should have literally 100+ apps out at a minimum at this point. You want to know why you are jobless despite your rank? You didn't apply to enough places or judges. Get some applications out like right now because there isn't much time left.

Apply to state and local govt. ASAP brah. Like above poaster said, it's not unusual to send out 100+ apps

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but where can I find which chambers are recruiting? My school's employment website has ~100 job listings; I've already gone through all of them and have applied to any/all that interested me.

Just send a paper app to every judge on a court where you'd be interested in working. Summer internships for judges aren't systematic like clerkships are. The judge I worked for doesn't even hire interns every year, sometimes he just sees an app he likes and hires. Just apply.

That's your problem. You limited yourself to those you were interested in you. You should have limited yourself to any you could do based on geography/year level. Go to your home state or wherever you can afford to live for the summer and Google "State X Courts" and start calling chambers. Then repeat for "Federal X Courts."

just because you are ranked near the top of your class doesn't mean that you are a shoe-in ANYWHERE. the upside is that you learned this lesson before 2L OCI/recruiting. get busy with a lot more applications, find something to do this summer that is related to the law (at this point anything will do), and don't make the same mistake again next year.

1L grades are pretty much irrelevant for 1L summer hiring. Getting an early jump on applications has a much bigger impact. You're already very late in that process, so apply to as many places as you can right now.

I think some of the discrepancy here might come from where people went to school. Rayiner and ATL go to good schools; hence 1L grades probably didn't matter much for post-1L employment. I got my post-1L job almost entirely because of grades, but I also go to a school where employers assume I'm unexceptional until grades/interviews (hopefully) persuade them otherwise.

Anything less than 30+ targeted apps is too few IMO.

Should be a good lesson for the outstanding T2 kid! being ranked number 1 as a 2L also won't get you anything unless you go after it...Kid must realize that there are literally thousands of students at higher ranked schools that firms are more likely to recruit...

That's besides the point. I knew people who were top 10% at my T14 after first semester who had to send out tons of apps to get a job. I was being a bit facetious when I said grades don't matter for 1L job search, but it's mostly true. During 2L OCI, jobs will fall in your lap of you're ranked #1 in your class. Outside of OCI, you really have to send a ton of apps regardless of how good your GPA is.

Top 5% in my class at a T25 after 1st semester w/ a tech degree, literally nobody cared about my grades until 2L recruiting rolled around. Signs point to: he doesn't know much, and that void includes what he thinks he knows.
