GPA cutoff by school rank and Vault rank

I was thinking it would be useful if people could suggest approximate GPA cutoff ranges according to school rank and firm rank, and then we could Sticky the thread. When I say "GPA", I actually think it'd be more useful to talk about class rank, since obviously a 3.6 will mean different things at different schools.

It could be organized like this:

V5
HYS cutoff:
CCN cutoff:
MVPB cutoff:
DCNG cutoff:

V10
HYS cutoff:
CCN cutoff:
MVPB cutoff:
DCNG cutoff:
T15-T18 cutoff:
T20-T25 cutoff:

V20
HYS cutoff:
CCN cutoff:
MVPB cutoff:
DCNG cutoff:
T15-T18 cutoff:
T20-T25 cutoff:
T25-T30 cutoff:

V30
HYS cutoff:
CCN cutoff:
MVPB cutoff:
DCNG cutoff:
T15-T18 cutoff:
T20-T25 cutoff:
T25-T30 cutoff:

V50
(assuming these firms take below median from the T10/T14 schools)
T15-T18 cutoff:
T20-T25 cutoff:
T25-T30 cutoff:
T30-T50 cutoff:
below T50 cutoff:

V100
(assuming these firms take below median from the T10/T14 schools)
T15-T18 cutoff:
T20-T25 cutoff:
T25-T30 cutoff:
T30-T50 cutoff:
below T50 cutoff:

Non-Vault NLJ250 firms
(assuming these firms take below median from the T10/T14 schools)
T15-T18 cutoff:
T20-T25 cutoff:
T25-T30 cutoff:
T30-T50 cutoff:
below T50 cutoff:

Feel free to suggest changes to the school ranks that I've listed as well, i.e. I'm not actually sure if V5 firms consider lower T14 candidates.

i think you're trying to force Vault rankings and legal hiring into the same framework as law school admissions, and it really doesn't work like that

OP: you are doing it wrong.

This might be potentially useful if OP understood how firms/vault rankings actually work.

Recommend replacing V5, etc with actual firm names.

Patterson Belknap, a V100, does NOT dip anywhere close to median at CCN. And they don't even recruit at most of the lower T14 (if any?).

Cute idea, OP. Revise when you're ready to take off your legal employment training diapers and actually discuss issues like a big boy.

OP here.

I understand that there are differences within the V5, though I didn't know a V100 firm would refuse to dip below median at CCN. If Vault is a bad indicator, is there another way to organize firms into groups according to what class rank they'll accept from each range of schools?

I understand location also plays a role, i.e. a firm based in California might dip lower in a local T20 than an east coast T20. What other data should I look at? I want to organize a general resource for people to know what kind of firms they can apply to based on their GPA.

Any attempt at this is an exercise in futility. Even if you could organize firms by general selectivity (which most schools' career offices already do for their students) there are always exceptions for individual students based on journal participation, pre-law school work experience, 1L jobs, other academic qualifications (like engineering majors), foreign-language skills, interviewing skills, and also for individual schools based on alumni ties, the economy (compare c/o 2012 with c/o 2013), etc. If anything, your list would give students misinformation on a topic their career offices will be much better at helping them with.

Edit: Not to mention that the curves are different at all these schools, and some don't even use standard grades.

V5 firms also recruit at T25s too. BU regularly sends a person or two to SullCrom, Cravath, and I think theres someone summering at Skadden this year. No DPW or Wachtell ever really I don't think.

This will end well.

Not only is this retarded for the reasons mentioned, but there is no such thing as a "gpa" cut off. The vast majority of schools aim for top gpa, but will take someone well below their normal with regularity.
