Alcohol Related Interest on Resume?

I have heard mixed things on this, so I thought I'd put it to the forum:

If someone has a big hobby/ interest that is alcohol related (e.g. home brewing, wine tasting, craft beers), is it appropriate to put it (in a non prominent place) in your interest section? Obviously I'm not planning to contravene what my OCS says, but I thought it might be an interesting question.

So what say you TLS: Is it a waving red flag of alcoholism, or an interesting thing that will be glossed over by the uninterested, but something to stand out on your resume?

I think something like "home brewing" is cool enough to put on a resume.

Especially if you refer to it as moonshining.

Unless you're applying in Saudi Arabia or Salt Lake City, I'd do it.

Assuming the person looking at your resume is a lawyer, statistically speaking, they probably like alcohol too... a lot.

This is perfectly acceptable.

I am confused that all the comments say yes but the poll skews no.

Is it even normal to put "interests" on your resume? I feel like it's a bit...informal.

I try to just list the academic and professional stuff (I had a job before law school). I figure I need to appear qualified before I can appear interesting, and I can be interesting in the interview.

I had a few extra lines of space. Figured instead of fluffing my nicely trimmed experience section I'd just add interests. I have more substance I could add, but nothing that adds much or catches the eye.

My "interests" section comes up at every interview.

Put it on there.

OP, if you have room, you should put a picture of your 'tar at the top of the resume. Love it.

Yep. an interests section gives the interviewer something to work with. Don't leave it off in exchange for yet another line of "candy striper, 2009"

This depends if you are good at brewing your own beer / distilling your own liquor. Giving a partner a bottle of cat piss or making him go blind is an easy way to get no offered.

Home Brewing is a definite yes. Wine tasting? sure I guess. Craft beer? Eh, at that point all you're saying is that you like beer (albeit high quality beer).

My interests section comes up in most interviews and I don't have anything special on there, just run of the mill kind of stuff.

Absolutely put homebrewing on there. It was a line on my resume, and was asked about it in every single callback I had last year. Easy conversation starter for an interviewer if there's a pause.

[Also, career services had advised me to leave it off, since "you don't know what people will think". Terrible advice; glad I ignored it.]

You're an adult, who cares? You don't want to work for anyone who wouldn't hire you over this. It's not like you're listing "Growing my own weed," though, as a side note, if you did that, I'd buy you a beer.

The savvy way to do this is "recreational hydroponics" and "agriculture for global markets"

At OCI, a partner asked me to tell her a memorable hobby, I chose homebrewing, she gave me the name of a partner to talk to at the firm who was also interested in it.

Never got a call back. . .

Or you know, "gardening."

tl;dr, seems like you shouldn't have an "interests" portion on your resume. Seems kinda, childish. But that may just be me.
