High class rank + no journal board = clerkship?

Top 10% at CCN. On secondary journal but have no board position. Strong, well-connected rec's and I think some strong writing.
Is CoA basically out of the picture with no board position?

It's not out of the picture, but it's still a crap shoot. I don't know that a board position would even help that much. Anecdote: My COA judge pays attention to EIC and certain other board positions of those on law review, but not for secondary journals.
I'd apply early and get your recommenders to go to bat for you.
