2L and I've been a law clerk at the USAO since sept 2011. should i stay through the summer or do a federal district court externship instead?

If you think there's a chance at full time employment then I would stay with the USAO. If not, I would take a shot at a District Court externship if you need the experience writing. If you've done a ton of writing with the USAO than I think just do whatever would make you happier. But, IMO you can't beat the substantive experience you get working for a judge and spending all day writing and sharpening your skills.
