Cover letters if a company only asks for resumes?

I know this has probably been hashed out somewhere, but I looked and can't find it.
My question is simple:
I'm applying to several internship positions. All of these positions are asking for just a resume. (They could very well be resume collects... whatever, I'm at least going to put my resume in for them.)
However, they're all asking for the resumes emailed to them.
What do I put in the body of the email?
I emailed a lawyer who had applied and got one of these positions when he was in school asking this question, and he said that he simply put his cover letter in the body of the email he sent to the company. He got the internship, so maybe this isn't a bad plan, but this is just one example.

I really didn't think this was common practice, but then again, what are you supposed to put into the body of such an email?

Any tips on what to do in this case?
My resumes are ready to go, and I want to fire them off, but I'm stuck on this question.
Thanks!

Nothing? Nobody has ever emailed a resume to a company/firm that only asks for resumes?
Just looking for quick advice here, nothing too substantive.
I can easily see arguments for and against sending the cover letter as the body of the email, hence why I'm asking TLS.

Put the cover letter in the body and attach the resume.
