Post by somewhatwayward » Sat Jan 21, 2012 12:17 am

does anyone know if columbia gives columbia alums e-mail addresses like XXX@alum.law.columbia.edu (usually just a forwarding service)?

As far as I know the CLS email situation is:
1. Almost immediately you get a initials(randomnumbers)@columbia.edu
2. Soon into the first semester you get a proxy firstname.lastname@law.columbia.edu that masks the address above.
3. Over the summer after graduation, you lose access to the second one, and I think you can either use forwarding with the first address, or get an alumni account of yourchoice@caa.columbia.edu

Also sorry since you probably already knew most of this...

Like the above poster was saying, I think the @columbia.edu address lasts forever. I haven't heard of a specific alum email address.

I thought you could still look them up on the student directory and input "alum" or something but I just tried and I think it's only for current students. Maybe ask IT on monday?

Try this too http://alumni.columbia.edu/alumni-directory

ETA: columbia.edu email addresses last forever if you set up forwarding but you lose the ability to log into cubmail after 6 months or so. You can also have a caa email address. No idea if the law school gives special law alumni email addresses though.

Only alums can access that directory, unfortunately.

Huh. I guess I never tried before I was an alum. Weird, you'd think students would benefit from it just as much. There must be a way to get alumni contact info. I'd offer to look people up but the site doesn't release the actual email addresses, just allows you to send an email message to alums through a form.
