you will NOT be recruited as a lateral until you are at least a Senior Associate. You may be able to hustle your way to a lateral position before then, but you won't be receiving recruiting calls.

OP here. I've learned this from sad experience. One of my friends is a junior associated and graduated around median. He gets ZERO calls from recruiters. Another friend, a graduate from UVA during the same year and a junior associate at a similarly-ranked firm, left with a 3.5+ and gets 3-4 calls a week.

So 2 friends equals a trend?

Yeah, this makes it standard. HTH your friend who is an associated is probably just an outcast.

Try finding an ad on here for a lateral position that doesn't require at least a 3.4 from a top law school:

The very first one I looked at doesn't have a required GPA. Therefore, by your statistical methods, none of them require a GPA!

In fairness there's some truth to what he's saying. It seems that a lot of big firms and DOJ almost never stop caring about grades. Another reason to abandon the prestige ship after a couple of years working in that environment.

You know, I will admit, I didn't know grades mattered for lateral recruiting, so I have determined this thread was not a total waste of time for me. Thanks, OP. I appreciate the reminder not to bomb 2L & 3L out of laziness.

That ad requires "excellent academics" =/= <3.4 from UVA. HTH.

All the ones in my practice area of choice did. His method doesn't have to be good for his message to be worthwhile.

But TLS told me that it doesn't matter where you went to school after you get your first job. I guess this is something that potential transfers should keep in mind if they're not already at one of the top twenty schools.

What is a 3.4 at UVA anyway?

REMINDER: going to law school outside of HY Chicago = u already failed at life; put on sweatpants and stop trying to "lateral" to a better position

Also a good point. Of course, recruiters are only one way of lateraling, and probably not even the best way, but it does say something about lateral hiring practices.

As funny as this looks, this actually seems to be the un-challenged and bull-shit belief of too many people on this website.
