I know that the standard length of an SA is ten weeks, but I was wondering if firms typically let you make it longer. Officially, it would be to gain more experience at the firm, build up more connections, and decide if this is the firm you want to start your career at (let's say hypothetically that 2L is going well enough for me that 3L OCI hiring might actually be a thing). Unofficially, it would be a chance to cash in some more of those $3100 weeks (hey, law school is expensive; don't judge). It's a V5 and the SA is at headquarters. No idea if that matters.

unlikely. they all downsized from 12 week summers to 10 week summers so that they wouldn't have to pay you that extra cash.

i know for a fact that davis polk and sullcrom both have 12 week summers.

Also, I'm working at a similarly ranked firm next summer and there is a good chance that I might get a one-month rotation at one of their Asian offices. If it all works out, the managing partner told me that they will probably add another week to my summer just so that people at the US office can have more time to evaluate my work for a perma position simply because I'll be away for a month. Maybe if you ask to do a rotation at another office, not necessarily an international one, this may become an option for you too? Just putting it out there for your consideration.

lol i'm sure all of us would like to work an extra 6 weeks at the easiest thing you'll ever have to do in biglaw. If this was an option lots of people would be jumping on board... basically they'll see right through your "official" reason.

This was on my radar. Not sure how it works at my firm though.

just do what they ask of you, go with the usual program. Don't ask to work 16 weeks if everyone else is working 10.

The only reason that I ask is that a friend told me that his firm contacted him and asked if he would like to work longer than the normal ten weeks. I would never push trying to work extra. Was just trying to figure out my options and how ordinary that is.

Does your offer letter say anything? Last year they basically said we could do anything between 8-12 weeks.

Ah, I guess I should go and review that. Don't specifically remember that language in there, but I could be wrong.

It appears that my firm's standard summer length is indeed twelve weeks. Guess I should get in the habit of doing some basic research before starting threads.

My mid size is paying for 12 weeks - 1L. How much $ are you looking at p/w?

Most 1L SAs get the same salary as 2L SAs, which is 1st year associate pay.
