...simply because you prefer the state's location? How much value does a 1L COA internship have (if you're all BigLaw and would maybe like to clerk)?

The dilemma you're facing is about as consequential to big law/clerking as my dilemma about whether I should delete my beavis and butthead episodes to make room for portlandia.
1L COA is b/s.

Doesn't matter for biglaw hiring. I interned for a state judge and saw no difference in OCI results between those similarly situated who had COA or D. Ct. interships. Maybe for clerking, if the COA judge has a history of hiring former interns, it could help you a small amount if you have the credentials for a COA clerkship by 2L year.

I know somebody who did a COA clerkship who got a pretty sweet LOR from the judge. I know some other judges have a policy against giving them though. Also, I think I've heard of more judges who have a policy against hiring former interns than ones who give any kind of preference toward former interns.

What you do your 1L summer doesn't matter, unless there is a chance of it getting you a permanent offer or out of debt.

False. If you have a 1L summer job that pays even minimum wage you can afford one bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label per week over the summer.

Or, alternatively, you could buy some liquor that's worth drinking. But otherwise, this is correct.

I have heard that interning for a Fed COA judge over the summer can be incredibly, incredibly boring.

Can also be a lot of fun, and some coa judges give you very substantive work. Anyway, no, it's not insane.

Not insane, especially if you are trying to build connections to the state judge's market for 2L summer/life.
