do law firms usually ask you to fill out W9 forms when you intern for them (during school year)?
what if the internships are unpaid?
do they still ask you to do so?

Do you mean I-9? It's required for any paid position, but it is not required for unpaid employees. Are you not legally permitted to work within the U.S.?

I got an unpaid internship the other day (which the employer said would turn into a paid one). the staff asked me to fill out a W9 the first day.
