Internship for credit

An interviewer told me today that the compensation could be for pay or credit. I don't have a preference since its an interesting job. But the hours aren't adding up to me. If its for credit, then is there a formula for how many credits I can get? It doesn't seem right to work 40+ hours weekly for a summer just for 3 academic credits. The pay would be a better deal. Does anyone have an experience working during the summer for credit? Thank you. (I apologize if I don't know all the forum historical threads or etiquette, this is my first post)

Your school controls the number of credits. Ask them.

Unless you are trying to do something like graduate early or your school charges per credit during the term, paying for a summer internship usually isn't worth it. Remember, you're paying the school for a course where you work for someone else for free. Working for someone else for free is great if you are getting something, but most people will let you work for free without credit. If you're getting paid, then even better. I'd need to hear a good argument for turning down the cash.

I think if I take the credit, then the company pays my summer tuition. I was only considering it if I wanted to graduate early (saving one semester of tuition). But I guess I would need to land the job and hear the specifics first. I just wasn't ready for the question "pay or credit?" I went b/c I like the description an it happened to be paid. But then I got intrigued by the thought of saving $20k later on.

If its only 3 credits, how would that cut a semester off?

When I said it didn't matter in the interview, I didn't do the math. On the way back, I posted this question out of curiosity. But if the school decides, then I'm pretty sure that my school would be open to 6 credits if the situation truly called for it. I don't think I would do it for 3 credit hours. (If it's 6, then I'm closer to the acceleration process but still may need to overload slightly one/two semester(s)).
