When do COA and DCt clerks take vacation?
What if you have back to back clerkships? Is it "understood" you will take the last 2 weeks off- during the summer when things are slow(er)?

Just to reinforce what GTLR said, it's highly variable.
I interned for a COA judge who basically frontloaded all his sittings so he would be free during the summer. During the summer, took vacations, worked from home, etc., and the clerks were generally free to do the same (within reason, as long as they got their work done, and as long as there was at least one clerk in chambers at all times).
Contrast that with the judge a friend from law school works for, who basically only gives actual federal holidays off.
