a firm offers me a contractual position which will turn full-time after 3 months...
if the pay rate for the contractual job is like $40 an hour, would it be safe to speculate that the full-time position would at least pay at the contractual rate?

Well you won't be paid hourly, but I'm sure you are safe to guess at least the hourly rate x 40 as a salary

i am not too positive about it
because I will not be paid on an hourly rate in the contractual position.
i will be paid on a project basis - like $150 for a project that takes 3 hours of work.
this is much trickier right? basically, they can hire me for $200 per day and have me sit at the office. I cannot presume that I will have 2 projects to work on every day.

Since it seems you already have the offer, why not ask?
