If you could only have one, would you prefer to live in your first choice city/location, or have the sort of job you prefer (BigLaw/DA/BigFed/whatever)?

Location. I would happily represent the most soulless, heartless, evil corporation for crap pay in a place I want to be.

Luckily my preferred location, while not NYC, is a market-paying secondary city that has good legal jobs and great culture / sunshine. Sometimes you can have the best of both worlds :)

Despite the obvious location bias in legal recruiting, legal work is clearly not tech or finance where there generally aren't jobs to be had outside of a given region. If you find your dream job in a less than optimal city (i.e. New York), then it probably makes sense to take it for the short term.

You know, I really though the clause "if you had to choose" would head off this sort of anoni-brag content-free posting, but in hindsight I should have known better.

Depends on the degree of concession in the other area. I wouldn't take an amazing job in Somalia, but I could be unemployed in a really nice place. However, for the most part, I'd pick job

While you're young, job should precede location. History shows time and again that people have to uproot for work. Gold rush, railroad, tech boom, etc.

Job. Which at this point means anything. I want to be a janitor for Jones Day.

It would depend on the number of hours worked. If its one of those jobs where you work 90 hours a week, then, you better like the job. If you work a normal amount of hours, then you better like the city.

I'm sure the local warlord would take 90% off the top.

Which really isn't that different from the U.S. government.

Damn anonymous button.

Also, since I neglected the initial question: job, definitely. Having lived all over the eastern half of the country, I've found that I can be happy just about anywhere.

Job. Location is irrelevant. I may be happier in some places than others, but I can find ways to be happy anywhere.
