MVP to NYC V5: taking Q's

This board has been really helpful, so I'll do my best to answer questions.

Initial comments:
- Work experience was REALLY important.
- Aim for firms with large class sizes. If your school limits the number of firms you can apply to, don't waste your time applying to a DC boutique that accepts 3 or 4 students per year. Unless you already have the job (i.e., connections, real reason for the firm), don't bother.
- For 1Ls: take an easy second semester. The benefits of getting better grades is infinitely more important than being able to say during interviews that you took both Federal Courts and Admin Law.

Off-limit comments:
- Anything that could potentially out me (school, firm name, specific stats)

Another MVP to NYC V5 offer here (though I ultimately accepted at a v15). Will be happy to add input when I see its relevant.

What was your favorite restaurant and hotel that you went on during callbacks?

Same here. Multiple V15 offers. Happy to help.

Tough question, because you're going to start hating the hotel scene when you have to go back and forth to NYC for one day interview bursts. But I'll say that the hotels that stood out:
* Gild Hall for S&C - probably the nicest hotel of the bunch - big, quiet, comfortable beds.
* Paramount Hotel for Cravath - the room was one of the smallest rooms I've ever seen in my life. Twin sized bed because they probably couldn't squeeze a queen sized bed in the room.

Note - you have PLENTY of time to explore NYC as a summer associate. The interviews I did best on were where I stayed in my hotel room and studied on the firm; the interviews I did worst on where I went out and explored and only spent a little time doing research. You're taking time off school and spending a lot of mental energy making the trip to the city. Make it count by working when you're there and not bombing the interview. (And this is coming from a really good interviewer.)

What's your advice to 2Ls who did well academically and yet could not land a firm summer associate job? Any hope?

How well academically? From what range of schools? Why do you think you didn't land a job?

How hard to get V50 from a T25-30?

Will top 5 percent stand a chance?

What kind of work experience did you have?
Can you give basic stats (top 40%, below median, etc)?

Probably depends what T25-30. The v15 I'm at only had two people from outside the t14 in the class.

Not original poster. But from my own experience and those of my friends, it seemed like MVP top 1/4 of the class opens all the doors in NYC except Cravath, S&C, and Wachtell.

You don't need great softs to to break into the top firms in NYC. You don't need work experience at all. It helps, but top grades at a T10 can get you an offer in the V5-10.

A t-20 school. Top 30%. Don't know why really. Every interview I went to, they were interviewing another 10,000 people on the same day. A lot of people in my school have no jobs, many of whom have gpas higher than mine. I'll have to do another unpaid internship somewhere, and work over the spring and basically every second I'm in school hoping against all odds that someone will want to pay me some money some day. Just wondering if in this situation do I ever have a chance of getting a decent paying job?

I don't get the point of this thread. 1Ls shouldn't be lurking around this sort of thing right now; it's too early and they don't have grades. 2Ls either already nailed it or blew it. What purpose could these anoni-brag threads possibly serve in late October?

Okay then. Any chance 2Ls wanna knock this shit off for like 9 months? Or even just until 1st semester grades come out for 1Ls?

What I don't get is why people who want to post anonymously but consistently (for a legitimate reason) don't register a throwaway account. Who can keep track of threads where people are saying shit like, "BTW I am the same anon as the anon who posted right after the third reply to the anon above."

Can we please talk about something interesting though instead? The on topic forums are so boring right now for law students. The "active topics" are like a wall of "169/3.72 Retake?"

I agree. If not for OP and others like him, this forum [and transfers] would be dead for like nine months.

I'm legitimately curious what kind of work experience allowed the OP to "outkick his coverage," what how much he thinks it really helped him (below median to V5 is very different than top 20% to V5).
