December/January SA Recruitment: What gives?

I was playing around with my school's symplicity this evening, and I noticed that around December/January of last year, big firms (including Cravath) were posting ads looking for SAs.
What's going on there? Is it at all common?

Random guess but they were trying to pick up the 4.0s or URMs of the 1L class?
