In the last couple weeks, ATL has had a few funny columns about "creative" ways to douchily brag about getting an offer. Over the past two weeks, the firm whose offer I've accepted has sent me two emails trying to get me to FB-Like their careers page.

I'll probably go ahead and Like the page in a month or two, but I find it funny. Why do I feel like complying with the Firm's wishes is about to land me on ATL as the douche of the week.

Just to be on the safe side, I made sure to "Like" Wachtell my first week of 1L.

If you're actually worried, like the page and delete the story off your wall so you don't look like a douche. Although I don't really think its that douchey.

I don't know if "worried" is the right word, and my worry about ATL is tongue-in-cheek, of course. But I've had enough encounters in recent weeks with the not-so-subtle braggers--and made fun of them mercilessly with my friends--that I know I don't want to be that person.

I don't care when people put their jobs on facebook. It's a social site, and jobs are a big part of people's lives and social interaction. I'm happy for my friends when they get jobs. Big deal.

agreed...but check out the article on ATL. the kid the article is about posted a picture of the offer letter and some other firm literature with some cheesy caption along the lines of "where i'm employed for the summer."

who said something about worry about it? it induces no worry, but i think most members of polite society would agree that posting such a picture on facebook is going overboard. it is similar to the posters who bragged about making law review. a girl in my section (which i found out through a friend - i blocked her long ago after she posted her grades on facebook) posted, "so excited to find out i just made fordham law review!"

not a big deal. but when lots of people just found out that they didn't make law review...it's a bit tactless.

I got a tattoo of Weil on my chest (color branding accurate) just so my potential lovers and fellow beach-goers know where to go with their legal issues. Douchy?

Yeah, but I'd say the same thing about a person who live blogs and offers daily status updates about...his dog. Some people are just douchy no matter what they're talking about. I guess I don't treat the subject of employment with a whole lot of heightened criticism. Maybe a little...to some extent, I agree there is a need to be sensitive about others' situations, but there is also the notion that people who are friends with you should be happy for you if you get a job. This one cuts both ways. If you're jealous of alleged "friends" of yours when they get jobs, then who is really the douche?

Another way of putting it is to say that I keep my facebook friends list managed so that there is nobody on it who would annoy me if he announced he had a job.

I agree. People have friends outside of their law school classmates. Extended family, as well. I've had friends in other fields update their facebook statuses to announce their new job. Usually, everyone is really happy for them.

If you really worked at Gibson, you would know they have a strict anti-Facebook policy. They don't want people to know who you work for.

Except dogs usually don't require a mountain of student loan investment like lawl schools do. I don't personally care if people announce their offers via FB, but your analogy is stupid.

Whether something is tactless/douchey has very little correlation to whether it hurts others' feelings. Extolling one's accomplishments, directly or indirectly, has been considered a showing of poor taste for, ahem, about as long as polite society has existed.

The analogy is fine. The guy getting the job didn't make you pay any amount for law school. That was your decision. I don't see why it's productive to hold your decision against him. If he's truly your friend, you should be happy for him.

Whether it's a baby shower, wedding reception, housewarming party, high school / college / boot camp graduation, retirement party, military promotion, or the christening of a new yacht, people in our society have long invited their closest family and friends to celebrate their most intimate and rewarding life events.

Fair enough; there are certainly exceptions, or at least types of accomplishments it's OK to be public about. I equate "Look at the firm gig I just got" much more closely to "Look how much money I make, Bro," possibly because that's why a huge percentage of people are happy to get biglaw in the first place.

It would just be embarrassing for everybody involved to brag about Weil. Are there people that firm doesn't give offers to?
