Lateral into a different state?

Is it possible to start in one city after law school, and then lateral to a different state a few years down the line? How feasible is this?
Would it be harder or easier depending on the position you have starting out? I assume Biglaw = easy to move into smaller markets in other states (or even big market to big market, like Chi-LA-NYC), but what about midlaw or shitlaw? How about public interest?
What kind of legal jobs would make it harder to move? What kinds would make it easier? Is it probably the case that you'd better really like where you end up, because once you take the bar you're stuck forever?
What can a young attorney do to improve portability outside of taking a biglaw job?
