Is it best to check a suit when traveling via plane or should you just keep it with you in your seat? I haven't had any experience with this. If you check it with it in a garmet bag will it get tossed around like all the other luggage and wind up a wrinkled mess? Or if you check it would you just fold it nicely and put it in your suitcase? Any insight would be appreciated. I apologize if this is a stupid question. (I put this in employment since I'm asking in reference to flying somewhere for an interview if it should be somewhere else feel free to move it.)

I have a tri-fold suit bag like this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HOQI6M, and always carry my suit on with me. Personally, I wouldn't want to risk the bag being mis-treated, or worse, have my suit bag get lost in luggage never-never land.

First, never check a bag. There is no reason (unless you are taking golf clubs) to ever check a bag. If you can't fit everything you need into two carry-on suitcases, you aren't packing correctly. Second, when traveling with a suit I do one of two things.

(1) I wear my suit on the plane. You can always ask the flight attendant to hang your jacket in the closet at the front of the plane. Remember, it is best to do this as you board as they will quickly be busy doing other things.

(2) More frequently I carry one carry-on suitcase (my air boss http://www.redoxx.com/Air-Boss/91018-air%20boss/product) and a Wally Bag with my suits and dress shirts (http://www.wallybags.com/index.php). As I board I will ask the flight attendant to hang the Wally Bag in the closet. Even if you cant get them to hang it, the Wall bag folds nicely and fits in the overhead without too much wrinkling.

When I get to the hotel, I use the travel steamer (http://www.amazon.com/Jiffy-Steamer-060 ... 266&sr=8-1).

I traveled extensively before law school (usually with multiple suits) and found those products to be the best. Hope this helps.

You can also use a garment bag as a carry-on. I have done this many, many times. Of course, it doesn't keep it perfect - you might need to pass an iron over it once before leaving the hotel, so this won't work unless you are staying overnight or have someplace to freshen up.

I would recommend against flying in the suit, unless it's a really short flight. It's likely you will get a little wrinkled or disheveled before landing. Especially being squeezed into those narrow rows, having to step/climb over people, having them step/climb over you, etc.

You can carry on your garment bag; there closets where you can hang them no problem at all -- just ask the flight attendant when you get on the plane (and you can bring them in addition to your regular carry-on and a purse/briefcase/laptop bag). Then just change when you get to the airport/your hotel depending on how much time you have.

Just don't let it sit in the suitcase too long -- make it the last thing you do before leaving and take it out to hang at the hotel. If there are a few wrinkles hang it in the bathroom as you shower, the steam should take care of it.
