What is the utility of this forum?
Seems like most threads contain almost nothing but misinformation and/or ignorance. Have people found this forum useful for anything other than sharing the pain of waiting for offers with others? These "polls" that people run---anybody actually base a decision off them? Never came here until OCI season, and now that I have an offer, thinking I'm never going to come back. But, I am curious if people think this is actually a useful forum and why.

Without in anyway disputing that this forum is an imperfect source of information, I am curious as to your basis for saying it is all ignorance and misinformation.

Re: What is the utility of this forum?
Hugely useful for me. I decided in early July that I wanted to apply to firms instead of just going into public interest (what I originally planned). After about 2 hours of searching threads, I knew what I needed to say in cover letters, when I needed to submit applications, and general strategy for applying to firms. Similarly, I've learned more about the clerkship process from GTL then all of my other research from every other website combined and my career services office.
Utility = high. Sure there's misinformation and prestige-whoring like nobody's business, but I've learned to parse that from the actual useful information.

The information in this forum is a combination of:meshtdagn wrote:Just a hunch.luthersloan wrote:Without in anyway disputing that this forum is an imperfect source of information, I am curious as to your basis for saying it is all ignorance and misinformation.
a) people synthesizing available information from public sources (Chambers, Am Law)
b) people recounting personal and friends' experiences at various firms
Which of those do you think is ignorant or mistaken?

I found the taking questions thread by the UIUC dean of admissions to be tremendously helpful.

There's very little risk of this forum ... so long as you understand its limitations.

Re: What is the utility of this forum?
ITT OP's choice firm was bashed heavily on TLS, and after talking to his lawyer friends/ppl at said firm, realized that the firm does not deserve this TLS bashing
edit: and i will add, i have found this forum extremely useful; if you know how to use it and navigate it (and i dont just mean the search function), it is an excellent resource -- and a good source of entertainment at times as well

Any internet forum is gonna have a certain of noise. There is some here, but it pales in comparison to the picture of the job market that I see in through this place.
I do wish there were more practioners/professionals posting though.

Any deontologists out there that would like to discuss the value of this thread/board outside of a simply numerical number? Kant > Bentham > Mill
