White & Case

Still a disaster?

Love the work they do; didn't mind the people; thought I could learn a lot from the partners. Out of all the firms I interviewed with, their specialties best match my interests. Love the idea of doing truly international work for the next few years, and the young associates seem to have travelled a lot.

Have a couple of offers from similarly ranked firms that don't really work in the practice areas I like. Pass up White & Case?

Also interested. Associate reports recently have been very low, but that could be a function of the layoffs. People seemed nice, and their work, interesting to say the least.

Hmmm. Associate surveys are anonymously reported, probably closely reflecting the actual feelings of the associates. Believe them? Nah, go with what they tell you in the interview. ????

What? No. Morale isn't the issue, firm health is. Anybody with insight into whether things are on the upswing there?

In any case, anonymity does not equal truth. Welcome to TLS.

I want to hear more about this: Is it a shitty place to work? People did get lathamed, is it expected to happen again? Some partners left, last year, but then again, this is a mega-firm, so partners leaving to another place is not unheard of...

I know people who summered there. It's a terrible place. I'd recommend staying away. They laid off more people than Latham and they generally treat their associates like crap. This is anecdotes mind you. I havent worked for this firm but just to relay what I've heard its a terrible terrible terrible place. You should do your own due diligence though, because its just anecdotal at this point

I summered at White & Case, and the last post is not accurate.

I'm surprised about it's bad rep. I did a callback there and everybody seemed nice and normal. I met with my screening interviewer for a quick hello while I was there—he really seemed like somebody I would enjoy working for.

Any insight/specific example? I plan on working there, so I'm just trying to learn more. Everybody I met sounded nice, and the partner that screened me specifically came up and talked to me after my callbacks ended, similar to the previous poster. It's my general belief that people whine and cry about big law, while failing to realize the money they are making and the fact that this is work, where it is not uncommon to get smacked around by a boss.

OP here. Biggest concern is really firm health. Have heard it's in (rapid) decline....thoughts?

Also, has the reputation been tarnished by the layoffs? For example - if they're V20 today and attract V20 talent, are they going to be V50 with V50 talent by the time I'm a senior associate?

Edit: understanding, of course, that vault is not the best factor by which to judge...uh, anything.

Vault '12 = 18th
Vault '11 = 20th
Vault '10 = 20th
Vault '09 = 18th

i'm also waiting on a CB from last Thursday- let's hold out some hope through the 2 week mark. maybe some people will decline as they get other offers and lead to more offer movement? maybe i'm delusional. i hope not though, i really liked everyone i met.

Don't want to give away too much, but comfortably above top third at a T6 and on Law Review.

For a New York firm, they generate very little revenue per lawyer. They're at 704k per year, which is about 200-400k less than it should be. Even Morgan Lewis puts up 875k.

Any recent offer/ ding news? I'm closing in on the 2 week post CB mark and trying to figure out if I should give up hope.

Formally turned down my offer today. I know that's expected with the yield, but part of me hopes that it somehow cleared the spot for somebody else.
