Seconded! Also: to those who did land clerkships, what was your general grade profile? Obviously you all did well, but I'm curious to get a ballpark idea of how it shakes out in terms of the HH/H/P balance.

I landed clerkships. But I'm not going to comment on my grade distribution. For one, that violates the honor code. Even if it doesn't given the anonymous setting here, its not in the spirit of this school to disclose grades publicly for any purpose - including the reasonable purpose you forward about wanting a "ballpark idea"

There's good reason why Berkeley Law doesn't tell its students that X distribution is median, or Y distribution is top 25%. The benefits of giving you the ability to "manage your expectations" are outweighed by the costs associated with the competitive b/s that ensues once students start "sharing information" about grades. I'm not trying to be a jerk, I used to think exactly like you, "What's the big f'ing deal?" - but I totally get it now.

The more cynical reason, of course, is to throw up a smoke screen at employers and confuse them about who's where in the class. If people start publishing grade profiles, that smoke screen goes away ever so slowly. Just know that about 40 people get clerkships from Berkeley per year, and that Berkeley has about 350 people enrolled - out of which maybe 150 apply for clerkships?

So, assuming a typical heavy-tailed distribution (Pareto, Levy, etc.) of clerkships among Berkeley applicants, you're probably looking at all but a handful of clerks falling in the top 15% or so. Which is consistent with the general consensus on here.

Who do I tell at my firm that I secured clerkships for 2012 and 2013? What do I say? I want to go back there...

I just called our recruiting office and told them I needed to defer for a year because of a clerkship. Not sure if this makes a difference, but my firm was incredibly supportive during the clerkship search and encourages people to do them.

Speaking from personal experience, there are OSCAR judges who won't even start reviewing apps until the winter or spring. I had an OSCAR interview in April last year.

There are quite a few judges who are listed on there who are done but just haven't updated their listing. (E.g., Carney, Dyk, Sutton, Vanaskie).

Judge O'Toole of D. Mass. has hired a 2012 HLS student (only had one spot, as he staggers his clerks through two-year terms).

If you're a GULC student, then just go on Symplicity and find the person's contact information on Bianco's profile and ask.

Received an offer from a judge in C.D. Cal. yesterday, a day after my interview. Had previously given up all hope for a clerkship this year--some hope remains for those still waiting!
