Is there a consensus on whether or not midwestern or southern firms expect thank you notes due to the culture?

Be safe. Spend a few bucks to get some decent paper, and spend fifteen minutes writing notes for each firm. In light of all the work you've done in order to get to this stage, why not just eliminate the potential for anxiety and write the notes?

FTR, that's the standard TLS wisdom.

I disagree: I think standard TLS wisdom is no notes and, if any, send them through email so they get there faster.

I suggest writing one to the recruiter, one to your on campus interviewer who made the CB invite, and one to the hiring partner if you met them on your visit.
