I have a call back in city X. Immediately thereafter I have a callback in city Y. The firm in city X bought me an airline ticket, which has a layover in city Y and then continues to my home town. Would it be a terrible idea to skip out on the last leg of the trip so I arrive where my next callback is?

And the only reason the firm would get charged for your NOT using a flight is if you rescheduled it through their agency. Don't do that.

Not so sure this is true. Due to the insane ticketing practices airlines have, sometimes a trip with a stopover can actually be cheaper than a flight to the city where the stopover is.

OP, the firms will pay for your travel anyway. Why don't you just get in touch with each of them and let them know the situation and work it out with their travel agencies. It will take an extra half hour of your life and you'll be doing things above water.

It's a lot harder to do the throwaway leg than it used to be because of security concerns. Whether those fears are founded or unfounded, you'd best check the policies of the airline in question before you do it.
