I just missed my flight to a callback at a V25 firm, and I had to pay $175 to get myself on another flight to get there on time for my interviews tomorrow. Any thoughts on how much the firm will be annoyed, even though I've been trying to keep down other costs as much as I can? And they'll definitely reimburse me, right?

Why did you miss it?

Just eat the cost. Is $175 really worth the risk of appearing irresponsible?

Disclaimer: 1L. If you missed it, it was probably your fault, but my guess would be they won't notice or care as long as you show up. I wouldn't expect to reimbursed though, they already paid for one flight for you.

Appreciate the thoughts -- Long story short, it was basically my fault. But granted, I had had a relative take me to the airport when a $100+ cab ride definitely would have been covered by the reimbursement policy. I also stayed over at my relative's when I could have asked the firm to keep me in a hotel for the weekend. I already have an offer from a firm that I like more, so I'm tempted to just go ahead and push to be reimbursed.

I wouldn't even ask them to pay for this. However, I tend to be conservative about things like this. If you decide to ask them to, however, be sure to check their reimbursement policy first. I read at least one that said explicitly they will not pay for fees or extra costs for travel changes that aren't due to weather or cancellations.

Thanks. There doesn't seem to be any provision in the policy about extra travel costs.

i think if it's your fault that you missed the flight, you should probably just eat the cost

If you have an offer from a firm you like more, why are you even going? As for the reimbursement, you can try to submit it, but I doubt they'll reimburse you. While firms are lenient for cabs/food/hotels, it's normally because they have policies that deal with those issues, and an accounting process to record the costs. A missed flights on the other hand is not a normal cost, and therefore doesn't fit nicely into the process that the recruiting assistants have to abide by.

If you recognize that pushing for reimbursement could hurt your chances at an offer, yet you are willing to do it anyway just because you have another offer you intend to take, perhaps you should just cancel the callbacks and accept your existing offer? If other firms are splitting the cost then requesting reimbursement could potentially affect you at all the firms you're seeing.

If you are serious about these other firms, conduct yourself as if you don't have another offer already.

Points well taken. Just to clarify -- I have two more callbacks on this trip that I'm seriously interested in. I'll consider biting the bullet and incurring the cost myself.

Call the recruiting person and see what they say. If it's a problem eat it, if not, get it paid for.

I can't believe you're even considering requesting this. You screwed up, you pay for it.
