did you guys already have 2L SA positions, and the reason you are doing 3L oci is because you were not happy with the experience?

For me, I had a 2L SA position and hated my firm. I found the culture to be very fratty, male-centric, and not very hospitable for women. I worked hard to make sure I'd get an offer just so I had something as a fall back and also so that 3L OCI firms would know that it wasn't bad work, but my choice, to be looking for a new firm/position.

CN, no firm SA as 2L, cbs at two NYC V40s. Fuck the people who want to trade-up, I've heard of people trying to go from V10 to V5.

If you're looking for a less fratty culture, I hope you have CBs at other firms than Latham.

Why do you care? V5s interview looking for people who want to trade up, not people who struck outthe first time. They're not stealing your jobs. If anything they're opening up V40 slots you could get.

There's a difference between fratty in the sense that people use it with Latham and, say, a firm where the male partners treat female associates like pieces of meat. My problem is with the latter.

In theory, if nobody tried to trade up, poster's position would, worst case scenerio, stay the same.

I know of people who got V5 jobs without having SA's in c/o 2011. I also know a V5 trying to add more than 10 positions, which means they are looking to build a class, not tweak it. That means it is likely they would consider someone without a 2L SA job.

You don't know that the V40 would actually go back to the 3L market and look to fill one or two 3L slots. A V40 losing their one prestige hungry SA could just say "well, so we'll have one less entry-level associate" than try to do 3L hiring. The firms trying to build their class are actively looking for people- those jobs are there right now.

Yeah. My guess is that they'd fill this spot with a lateral or hire 1 more person at next year's 2L OCI. Firms simply don't have enough time to react to an SA who does not return during the OCI season following that SA's summer.

As a woman with a few interviews in LA, could you out the firm or at least PM it to me? Thanks!

Given that firms are only hiring at most 2-3 new associates, I just feel like 3L associate-hire considerations get delayed until they interview ALL of the CB candidates.

Sound reasonable?

all my response times have been within the same week, often times the next day. don't think timeline is different. it definitely coincides with 2l recruiting, but it might also last longer.

no. f all the people with 2.9s who decided to bid on vault 10 firms during 2L recruiting thinking they can sway the interviewer with their awesome people skills. if you wouldn't waste everyone's time and selfishly take interview spots, some of us wouldn't have to trade up.
