this is a scary and awful idea... wouldn't that mean you have to be in the forces for a bunch of years?

Not if you're already in law school. It will help if you were enlisted before school, just because it shows your interest/dedication to the military. But just about everyone that gets in does law school and then immediately enters into the JAG corps after passing the bar.

it's not that scary, it's only a four year commitment, and you get gauranteed trial experience in your first two years, and 60 grand for student loans, plus you make about 60-75k a year after bonuses and allowances

Plus you're a government employee with military law experience. It would make getting a federal job very easy after the four years are up.

I guess I'll just go ahead and fill out the apps then, thanks for the info

You can't be an enlisted JAG -- JAGs are by definition officers. As someone else noted, having been enlisted in the past would probably make you a more attractive JAG candidate, but if you're currently in law school, enlisting would be a really weird and tortuous (also torturous) way of trying to become a JAG. Are you going to enlist as a paralegal?
