Moving from big market to mid market

Hello everyone
How does transferring from one job to another work? Im a 0L trying to learn more about the field, so forgive me for any ignorance. Believe me, Im not putting the cart in front of the horse, just doing my research.
For example, if one were to work for 2-4 yrs in Chicago "big law" after graduation from a t14 and then try to transfer to a smaller city like Des Moines or St Louis, how likely is that? I know that the legal market isnt exactly booming, but if you can provide "ties" to that smaller market, are you marketable as a t-14 graduate with "big law" experience? Are the prospects for someone 3+ years out of law school more dire than a 2/3L? Obviously this is all conjecture, so all Im looking for is generalizations. Additionally, I'd likely couple any anticipated move with a heavy dose of networking (my specialty).
Obviously the pay cut would be significant, etc. But I'd be moving for family reasons, and CoL adjustment may make up for the cut anyhow.
Thanks for any advice!
