E-Mailing Firm After Turned Down and Getting Job

This past weekend one of my friends told me a story about someone who got turned down by a firm for an OCI preselect (ie didn't even get a screener). BigLaw in DC just for the record.

She sent the recruiter an e-mail expressing her extreme interest in working for the firm (I think this legitimately might have been her #1 choice) and they gave her an interview. The interview turned into a callback. She's working there now.

Anyone have any information on this sort of thing?

My friend emailed a firm at OCI she didn't apply for after realizing she didn't want to accept the offer she got (she's a 3L) and they gave her an interview. I think it's mostly just because both firms are in a small market and her getting an offer at one means she should get an offer at the other.
