How to Mass Mail

Go ahead and flame away but hopefully someone will give me info.
How exactly do I go about mass mailing to a market I'm not in? Is this worth my time? It seems like a long shot that a firm would hire someone they've never worked with but maybe I'm missing something. Also, do you all use mail merge or how does this work?
