Which is the preferred way to go? Is it ok to send your app straight to the hiring partner/recruiter rather than appyling through the firm's online application system? Thanks!

If they have an online system, use it. That is how we organize applications and it makes it more difficult to deal with applications. You can send a follow up e-mail to give them a heads up that you have applied.
