Top Law Schools

Where should I be applying if I want to do this in New York or DC? I know it's a tough practice area to crack, but assume I have the grades and credentials to have a shot.

These are two pretty disparate practice areas, and extremely niche/rare. Anything involving con law is mostly going to go on in DC as far as I know, which is the hotbed of appellate practice. Media law on the other hand is just... I don't know. If you have the grades, I would recommend broadening your expressed preference to appellate litigation generally and applying to NY and DC firms that have strong practices in those areas.

Yeah I'll concede to being wrong there. I see how they would obviously go hand in hand. Still think you should broaden your focus, but if you have the credentials go for it.

Yeah, Cahill has Floyd Abrams, who seems to be involved in like every blockbuster 1st Amendment case.

Actually not true for either -- they hire summer associates.

This is accurate. However, it should be noted that the NYC office of DWT only hires one summer associate, and it's always a 1L. This is specifically because they don't extend permanent offers to summer associates for this office because it's so small.

Um, Cahill Gordon should be the first and only name that pops into your head. Floyd Abrams is a partner there and he argued Citizens United and the Pentagon Papers case before the Supreme Court. Not to mention he represents countless reporters in cases where they are being subpoened to protect their confidential sources. He represented Judith Miller and was even in a movie about reporter's privilege. NY Times is a HUGE client of theirs.
