Do NyC ties really not matter?

If you are from a completely different part of the country and don't go to school in NyC, does it hurt your chances at all?

Is the type of work done in NyC enough of a "tie"?

Basically they don't matter. You don't want to put on the impression that you're looking to return home to Kansas or wherever after a couple years, so if you have extensive ties to a totally different part of the country, think of a believable answer to the fairly common "why do you want to work in New York?" question. You won't be at a disadvantage though; New York firms know you want to go there. It's New York after all!

Blatant anti-York trolling.

They really don't matter. Like any other question, you can screw yourself with a stupid response to "why NYC" but unlike most other markets it's just conversation. NYC is a huge magnet for people from across the country, with or without ties. They're too big to operate any other way.

 I was actually just talking about this the yesterday with a friend who is going to NYC this week. NYC people are so ridiculous because they think everyone wants to come to their crappy city. But it works out for people that don't have any ties to NYC... I actually don't think any of the firms I interviewed with from NYC even asked whether I had any ties to NYC. Firms in DC and LA really harped on what kind of ties I have to their market (probably because I really don't have any).

Just be ready to spontaneously sing this with your interviewers and you'll be fine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UjsXo9l6I8
