3.45 NYU

I'm curious: Where does a 3.45 fall in terms of NYU's class? Any one know if people with a 3.45 generally have any luck with the most selective firms (Sullivan & Cromwell, etc.)?

3.45 is maybe top 35%-ish, I think. (As I recall, 25% is ~3.55 at graduation for Latin honors, and median is 3.30 after 1L.)
SullCrom is notoriously picky about grades and probably (although not definitely) would not take a 3.45. Other top firms don't have strong grade cut-offs, but a 3.45 would need to be a great interviewer and/or have great past work experience to get V10, except maybe Skadden and Weil, which are less picky about grades. Definitely you have a shot at them all, but they're all reaches, so I hope you bid plenty of V50 firms with large SA classes above them.

Do you know where a 3.1 is?

If median is 3.30, then 3.1 would be about bottom 40% I suppose. I think below 3.0 is the bottom 30-35% of the class, so a 3.1 would be between that and median.

I don't go to NYU, but that would correspond to a *remarkably* high SD (and a broad, flat 'curve').

Yeah, 3.0 is way worse than bottom 30%. Remember that there are very few B-s and no grades below B- (at least, there weren't any first semester, and there probably weren't any second semester, either). Straight Bs is pretty close to bottom of the barrel, maybe bottom 10%. (Only ~5% of a class gets a B-, and the odds are that most of those go to people with some B+s or better in the mix as well.) Of course, that means the drop off from 3.3 to 3.0 is rapid in terms of class rank. It's very hard to say what a 3.1 or a 3.2 is as a result, but I would guess a 3.1 is maybe around the bottom quarter or so. Just a guess, though.
Although I doubt many employers are making fine distinctions about rank once you get below 3.2.

S&C and Davis Polk avg was like 3.6/3.7 for 2009 recruiting - imagine might be a little lower last summer because the economy was not as bad, but I'd say 3.5+
Those firms were prob the most selective in terms of grades (although I did not look into Wachtell, Cravath, Boies, or W&C).
